At the height of the Covid pandemic some crematoriums restricted funeral mourner numbers to just five or six. A heartbreaking time for all.
Gradually numbers crept up to a maximum of 30 and as of later in May 2021 these numbers will increase depending on the size of the crematorium.
Sadly this will mean larger families or groups of friends will still be excluded. Thankfully technology came to the rescue. The streaming of funerals live over the internet has meant family and friends across the globe have been able to take an active part.
Also humanist celebrants have adopted the use of Zoom, Facetime, Teams and WhatsApp to conduct family ‘visits’ online. With global travel curtailed many family members were simply unable to travel by law.
In some cases absent family members have recorded personal tributes which have been played over the crematorium sound system enabling them to take an active part in the service.
Humanist celebrants across the globe have learned to approach funerals differently and learned many lessons along the way. In a post Covid world technology will I am sure continue to play a big part.
